Response to "Aesthetics of Unreality"

Chapter 7’s discussion of how artists take what is imagined and known and transform it into reality or a different version of it was a striking one. I think that the process of imaging and ideating is definitely a form of speculation in that if an idea can be imagined then it can also be brought to life in some shape or form. Unrealities are only realities that haven’t been attempted to be brought to life. In order to Brin imagined ideas to life, it is important to not focus on bringing everything we imagine to life all at once. That is an overwhelming process which may keep us from truly envisioning fictional worlds as real one. Rather, if we don’t work in a linear way, and bring forth small aspects of what we imagine, we can get closer to what we imagine. As stated in the article in order to envision the unrealities as realities, we have to view scenarios in a way that “communicates fictional realities by bringing a bit of unreality into the everyday.”

This is an inspiring chapter as it is very encouraging of not letting ideas just stay on paper. We have transgressed in terms of technology and have more abilities to bring our ideas to life now more than ever before. We have machines that enable us to create 3-D models on computers. Technology like 3-D printers exist to turn these Ideas into tangible items. If we imagine a giraffe with a turtle’s body, if someone truly wants a model of it, they can design it and print it out and have it. Our CGI has come a long way in the last twenty years. Movies seem more and more realistic even when the supernatural or out of this world nature of it may seem absurd, the screen portrays them in such a realistic manner that is difficult to tell what is real and what is fake. We can take these advancements and help our ideas flourish transforming one unreality at a time.
