This past week as I was brainstorming for ideas for the Future Casting project, I was trying to think of virtual things that would make my life cooler. My roommate and I were discussing data and how capitalism thrives off of data collection and tracking people. We were talking about how both of us own smart home devices such as a Google Home and Amazon Alexa. These products collect a large deal of information about users and better track people. This made me think of a world where you can see how much information you give everyday objects in you life. For example, if you touch a plant, you can tell you like plants and find information about what type of environment based off how well the plant lives. If you have a lamp, it could track how much work you do using the lamp and what hours of the day you tend to work. If you have a smart home bathroom then it can determine which parts of the day one showers, etc. We as a society are moving towards a more and more technological world, but what does this mean about all the data that is being extracted by each and every one of our movements? I would like to explore this theme for my Future Casting project.
